The great depression occurred in the 1930s, not the 1970s. The biggest problem facing America in the 70s was the collective pain of the Viet Nam war. That war divided the country like it had never been divided before nor has it ever been divided since. Another issue facing Americans during that time frame was the Iran hostages and the inability of the President (Carter) to get them freed. They were held for over a year and were ultimately set free on the day Reagan was sworn in as President.
