@xcrawfishx @tpunt1125 While all autotrophs can fix atmospheric carbon (CO2), meaning remove CO2 from air and use the carbon to make sugars etc, the still need other nutrients. Some of these nutrients are not found in great quantities in the ground. Bacteria, a specific group of bacteria, are capable of nitrogen fixation. These bacteria can remove N2 from the air and incorporate it into things like proteins. Many of these bacteria live inside special structures of members of the pea (legume) family.
