painful memories are relentless. they refuse to leave us alone. the optimist might point out that a happy memory may stay with you just as long as one that makes you miserable, but what they forget to mention is what you remember softens over time. the edges blur and the details fade. what you recall is simply that you were happy. not necessarily the individual details that brought about the happiness. the memory of something painful does just the opposite. It retains its original shape. every time you recall it you get a punch to the stomach that leaves you incapable of breathing. it settles deep inside; an unmovable stone gradually crushing our lungs. the memory of something painful hurts long after the actual event. the injury hurts anew each and every time it creeps back inside our mind.
