So, By the amount of crappy developers working for openstudy, they must be kids.
Why you say so... ayee that's not nice tester, if they are some crappy developers why don't you go ahead and make it not so ''crappy'' lets see you as a developer, I wonder what you can accomplish. In my perspective, what those guys have done for OS thus far is beyond my imagination! They are some talented bunch of guys y'know...You aren't aware of what goes on behind the scenes. What's apparent to us isn't always the case, dig deep down and you'll see... After all still waters run deep @e.mccormick can approve this
crappy indeed
either they need better servers, they need to fix their php, or they need to fix their database algorithms
tester97, the original site was largely made by students. Graduate level, but still learning. As such, much of the code could user some or a lot of work. This has been an ongoing processes and the code base is far more stable than it used to be. Many of these improvements are due to them using an experienced development company for the last several months. caominhim, it is not php, so fixing php will not do anything. The servers are an Amazon cloud virtual array, so no, that is not needed. And you better learn what "database algorithms" are before you try any talk about them. They are not a cure all. The lookups are pretty fast, so the database is not the issue. What would really help is if they found all the people doing DDoS attacks against OS and put them in prison.
correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't php used to make database calls from the client? also why would someone DDoS this site? Everyone here either doesn't know what that means or is someone helping others, there's no reason to attack this server
No. They are not using PHP. They are using JavaScript linked together with a server side program. The database they have chosen also uses a simplified JavaScript interface and JSON queries, so basically they were able to do everything front to back in forms of JavaScript. It is also not an SQL database, so many of the optimizations people might make for SQL simply do not apply. As for why someone is DDoSing the site, it is because they think that free speech means they can talk about anything in chat, ask for child porn on the site, etc. What they do not realize is that due to a 2008 ruling by the Supreme Court, even asking for things relating to sex with a minor is NOT protected speech, so even if free speech laws applied on a web site (and they don't,) what they want to talk about is still illegal. But because their accounts were suspended for trying to use OpenStudy as a sexting site, they are DDoSing it. I have seen the teachers page before. It says nothing about PHP development, so I am not sure how it applies to what you are saying.
