What is the value of the expression k – 14 when k = –17? A. –31 B. –3 C. 3 D. 31

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

Hello! :) First, what is a negative number - a number?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

go in calculator and type -17-14 lol that gives the answer right away

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

@TheFezLol , the asker obviously wants to learn how to do it without relying on a calculator for everything

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a. -31, because a number minus another number is a negative

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

dayo, thank you for explaining, but I was hoping the asker would come to that conclusion :/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry was in bathroom couldnt reply

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@sleepyjess i did want to learn how do it with out a caulculator

OpenStudy (anonymous):

when you ad a negative number to a positive number, you need to add instead of subtract to find the total negative answer from the equation

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

Would you still like me to explain?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes please

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I hope this helps with working it out without a calculator

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

Okay, do you end up with a positive or negative number when you subtract 2 negative numbers? I.e -2-1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

negative

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

Yes, sometimes I use a little trick I came up with. -2-1 = -3, now change the - to +, 2+1 = 3, then just add a - sign to the answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

k thank you so much

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

No problem :)
