The work of art known as an icon is most closely associated with which empire?
Icons are given religious significance by Greek or Eastern Orthodox Christians. Shortly after the Roman Empire was split in two with a ceaser for each, the western part fell. The government was gone. The Roman church, or Roman Catholics took over ruling the people best they could. In the east the empire was ruled from Constantinople. Before the big city was built, there was a little village called Byzantium. Historians call that eastern empire the Byzantine empire. But they thought of them selves as a continuation of the Roman Empire. That's where they worshiped icons.
