Why is an umbrella species beneficial to an ecosystem? Umbrella species actually harm other species. Umbrella species are protected, which also helps protect many other species in their ecosystem. Umbrella species only protect trees, which “umbrellas” certain ecosystems. Other species in an ecosystem eat umbrella species. @aaronq
