As far as I know, the tonal contrast is a dimension of the color, that is very used in the media. The contrast will increase the further away the two combined tones are from each other in the chromatic circle. A very known application is of dark-white.

well I just found this "Tonal contrast is simply the difference between the light and dark areas in a painting." I'm now confused :/
