Will fan + medal. Do the values in the table represent a linear function? If so, what is the function rule? x, -2, 0, 2, 4 y, -4, 0, 4, 8 A) The values do not show a linear function. B) Yes, they show a linear function; y = 1/2x + 4 C) Yes, they show a linear function; y = 2x + 2 D) Yes, they show a linear function; y = 2x My answer: Either C or D Please help! Thanks :)
Let me refresh my memory on this and I'll help you in a few minutes
Ok @Fransisco_w
For a group of x and y coordinates to be linear -> \[\frac{ Change In y }{ Change In x }= always constant\] which we can tell be looking at the numbers an seeing if the change from x and y to next pair are constant -2 -> 0 -4 -> 0 thats one pair 0 -> 2 0 -> So these numbers are linear
hint linear means line think y = mx + b y varies directly with x for each x value input there is only one y value output
m is the slope of the line and the same as change in y/change in x as explained by @Fransisco_w above
Now that we now the numbers are linear we can find the slope be taking coordinates (-2,4) and (2,4) \[\frac{ 4-(-4) }{ 2-(-2) } = \frac{ 8 }{ 4}\]
b is the intercept the value of y when x = 0
Which would the answer be? A) The values do not show a linear function B) Yes, they show a linear function; y = 1/2x + 4 C) Yes, they show a linear function; y = 2x + 2 D) Yes, they show a linear function; y = 2x My answer is D? I am still confused. @Fransisco_w @triciaal
