what you have here is a proportion...so we cross multiply
2/1 = (8x - 2) / 9
cross multiply
1(8x - 2) = (9)(2)
8x - 2 = 18 -- add 2 to both sides
8x = 20 -- divide both sides by 8
x = 20/8 which reduces to 5/2 or 2 1/5
