Aristotle is associated with his idea of a natural scale or ladder of life with simple organisms on the bottom rungs and more complex organisms on the top.  Linnaeus is responsible for the system of taxonomy that we are still using today.  Oranisms are classified by assumptions made about their relatedness and in his time that would have been based on visible physical characters.
