The length of a rectangle is 5 inches more than its width, x. The area of a rectangle can be represented by the equation x^2 + 5x = 300. What are the measures of the width and the length? Width = _______ inches Length = _______ inches

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

so rewrite the equation as \[x^2 + 5x - 300 = 0\] solve the quadratic... it can be factored.... find the factors -300 that add to 5. the larger factor is positive. when you get the solution, only use the positive value... as measurements can't be negative.

OpenStudy (er.mohd.amir):

x^2+5x-300=0 solve it make two factor of 300 which on subtract give 5. since 300 has - sign.find value of x.
