quadratic formula

I've tried multiple times and keep getting different answers

OpenStudy (amistre64):

there are a few methods, the most basic one is long, but works

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[x = (-b +or- \sqrt{b ^{2}-4ac})/2a\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a is 3, -12 is b, and 2 is c

OpenStudy (amistre64):

we want a solution of the form (ax+n)(bx+y) expand it out and compare parts ax(bx+y) + n(bx+y) ab x^2 + ax y + bn x+n y ab x^2 + (ay+bn) x + ny ab = 3 ny = 2 ay + bn = -12

OpenStudy (amistre64):

completing the square would be the next longest option i spose what method are you partial to?
