Help please? Will give medal Six apples and 12 oranges cost $18. If x represents the cost of one apple and y represents the cost of one orange, then the variables can be related using the equation 6x + 12y = 18. Which variable is the independent variable? A. x B. y C. There is no relationship between the variables.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lost on this one clearly C is wrong becuase there is a relation between them that relation is \[6x+12y=18\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

traditionally x is used as an independent variable and y as a dependent one, so maybe you are supposed to say "x" but that is not really correct nothing in this case makes x any more or less speical than y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks you got me farther than I was before to be honest ._.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yw to be honest (as you would say) questions like thees, written by incompetent educators, really make me mad it is not your fault that the person who wrote this question is not competent to teach math (or more likely not competent to write questions for FLVS or some other on line system)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this goes write in my "bad math" folder one day i will publish them

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I honestly agree my teachers aren't really good :/

OpenStudy (triciaal):

I guess it was designed to make us think.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok then (gently) ask them why the number of apples is dependent on the number of oranges, and not the other way around love to hear the answer to that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I will hopefully the answer will be helpful and triciaal I think your right ._.

OpenStudy (triciaal):

both ways together a constant

OpenStudy (triciaal):

each variable is independent but as you increase the number of either the number of the other decreases because of the cost

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This is a tough one -_- and it's gonna take a while Honestly I'm trying to get all my big tests done cause my teachers took away 100+part of my grade and there's only a few weeks left in school. They didn't even tell me why they took away my grade level

OpenStudy (anonymous):

probably at random, the same way they write math questions no thought given

OpenStudy (anonymous):

^^^ Exactly :D and the thing was I was/am getting A's and B's so-

OpenStudy (anonymous):

did you pick one yet?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i would go ahead an pick "x" and not think about it any futher you have to pick something and C is wrong, so choose x and be done with it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah I picked x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok i hope tha is what they want

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Me too but honestly I'm starting to not care anymore -_-

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah it is too bad, the state of math education don't fret about it, math gets more interesting the more you know

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah thank you :p :)

OpenStudy (triciaal):

don't give up
