ORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (Achieve3000, February 12, 2015). Three young Haitians went to Paris, France. That was in 1895. They studied architecture. Then, they returned to Haiti. They built "gingerbread houses." These homes have fancy windows, doors, and ceilings. They're built only in Haiti. Many are in Port-au-Prince. Years later, the city grew. New houses were built. They were made of concrete. Other buildings were torn down. Some were gingerbread houses. In 2010, an earthquake hit Haiti. Tens of thousands of concrete buildings were destroyed. But some gingerbread houses lasted. Why was this? They have flexible wooden frames. About 200 gingerbread homes remain in Port-au-Prince. They're old. Now, a group wants to help. It's working to restore the buildings. This makes many Haitians happy. Why is this? Gingerbread homes are important. They're part of the country's history. Information for this story came from AP.
