I would like to make a suggestion. I believe that Openstudy should have an 'auto-close' feature where a question is automatically closed after being idle (uncommented, unedited) for a period of time. I find many posts in the Maths section specifically lingering where they have already been answered previously.

I like the idea, but I see your example is posts in math, there are some people that will just say they understand it, but they don't. And they feel like they will offend the person that tried to help them if they ask someone else *cough totally not me cough*

Also another problem with that are tutorials. Many users have made a tutorials and then those would auto-close.

However, closing questions will not really reduce the lag at all.
