Wastes are removed through the placenta. Blood flow in the fetus is caused by the heart pumping. The babies blood picks up oxygen and nutrients at the placenta and drops off waste at the placenta. There is transport between the baby's blood stream and the mother's blood stream through the tissues of the placenta.
