Why did Mexico adopt the harpy as its national bird? a.Many harpy eagles live in Mexico. b.They consider it a symbol of strength. c.Many people are frightened of it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Are you sure it is the Harpy Eagle? Looking it up, I have read that it is the cara cara bird, which is a large majestic looking falcon, and was originally depicted killing an aquatic venomous snake, but later it was changed to a golden eagle killing a stylized rattlesnake, probably because most people didn't know about the cara cara anymore since its population had declined. The cara cara is often called an eagle because of its size and majestic appearance, but technically it is not. Obviously the harpy eagle and the cara cara both ought to be preserved.

OpenStudy (kendricklamar2014):

Yes, the answer is B. As you can see in the Mexican flag, the Eagle is holding a snake. Which made this eagle a symbol of strength
