An equation of the line tangent to the circle..

OpenStudy (aripotta):

i got 3x + 4y = 24, but that's not one of the choices. did i do something wrong?

OpenStudy (aripotta):

@jim_thompson5910 can you help me?

OpenStudy (loser66):

OpenStudy (loser66):

the tangent line is perpendicular to the line pass through (0,0) and (3,4) as shown, namely OT, |dw:1431996414688:dw|

OpenStudy (loser66):

the line OT has the slope 4/3, hence tangent t has the slope -3/4

OpenStudy (loser66):

Now, tangent t: slope -3/4, passes through (3,4), can you write down the equation of it ?

OpenStudy (aripotta):

y - 3 = -3/4(x - 4) but i got 3x + 4y = 24

OpenStudy (aripotta):

as the equation in standard

OpenStudy (loser66):

You didn't show me the steps, right? how can I know where your mistake is?

OpenStudy (aripotta):

oh right lol sorry. y - 3 = -3/4(x - 4) y - 3 = -3/4x + 3 y = -3/4x + 6 3x + 4y = 24

OpenStudy (aripotta):

oh i missed a step. before the last one 3/4x + y = 6

OpenStudy (loser66):

hey, the point is (3,4) not (4,3)

OpenStudy (aripotta):

ooh derp!

OpenStudy (loser66):

hence if y-, it is y -4, not y-3

OpenStudy (aripotta):

thank you! the answer is e :)

OpenStudy (loser66):

yup
