"The Democratic Party was split between the Southern Democrats and the Progressive Democrats. While Truman won a large electoral vote, his popular vote was under 50 percent. The election showed an electorate split or divided between south and north. It forecast the Civil Rights movement of the 50s and the nation's desire to return to domestic issues, the economy, and the Cold War fears that would develop after Truman's term.
