In a sentence like "We thought the acrobat was going to fall off/off of the tightrope." Which do you use, off or off of?

Honestly, either works. Each one is perfectly correct. It depends entirely on how you want the sentence to sound. Also, if you're writing an essay with a length requirement, I myself would include the extra word ;)
