Indentured servants didn't work to well in North America and the Caribbean. First they were European. Almost 100% of Europeans who came and lived in the Chesapeake Ban and south got sick the first few months. About half died. More died the further south you go. Second, there was an end to their service. When their contract was up, you had to find a replacement worker. Africans didn't have the health problems. That's why huge amounts of Africans were imported to Hispaniola and the rest of the Caribbean. There was an initial cost of enslaving and shipping people from Africa but the long period of usefulness made up for that. If anybody could have actually figured out how to do it. There were probably plenty of Africans who would willingly go to work for Spanish, Portuguese and English businesses as indentured servants. But people just didn't think that way.
