Which was a basic Cause of the American Revolution?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The American Revolution began in 1775 as open conflict between the united thirteen colonies and Great Britain.

OpenStudy (wwhitlock):

The cause stemmed from basic lack of respect for people in the colonies by the English. The colonists served only one purpose to most of England. That purpose was to produce raw goods for English merchants and business people to sell elsewhere. Colonists were routinely overcharged for goods from England, cut out of the more lucrative trade opportunities and generally treated as second class citizens. All of that came to a head when Britain started taxing them to pay off war debts. They had been allowed to govern themselves for the most part. But now England was going to exercise power over them while still treating them like cow droppings. It just got worse from there. The ideas of the Enlightenment, including Natural Rights, were in the air and the Americans were in just the kind of situation were they could take those ideas and do something about it.
