What is the median of the following set of numbers? 140, 148, 153, 140, 122, 178, 164, 196, 164, 185

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know how to do median but its an even number

OpenStudy (welshfella):

arrange the numbers in ascending order then take the mean of the middle 2 numbers ( that is the mean of the 5th and 6th)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

When n is Even Median = (n/2)th observation + (n/2 + 1)th observation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

u dont have to take the mean of those two terms

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that observation is the median

OpenStudy (welshfella):

?????

OpenStudy (anonymous):

122,140,140,148,153,164,164,178,185,196 in order

OpenStudy (welshfella):

you have 10 numbers so 2 'middle' numbers are which?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

153 and 164

OpenStudy (anonymous):

158.5 ?

OpenStudy (welshfella):

right so i think the median is the mean of these 2;- that is (153 + 164) / 2. It was when i was in school though sheyryar think differently

OpenStudy (welshfella):

yes
