Solve 2x - 3 = 4 (x+2) (WILL FAN AND MEDAL ;))

OpenStudy (hysusonic):

what do you think you have to do first?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Distribute. Btw the way I got an answer, but I don't think its right. So can u solve it and tell me if my answer is right?

OpenStudy (hysusonic):

sure

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what answer did you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x = 2x + 5.5 ?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

x needs to be all by itself

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh right. Hold on

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x = 2. 75 ??

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

that is incorrect

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what is 4(x+2) equivalent to when you distribute the 4 through?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4x + 11

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OOPS

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I meant 4x + 8

OpenStudy (hysusonic):

okay what do you do after you get that answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

add 3 or subtract 4?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

correct, so we have 2x - 3 = 4x + 8

OpenStudy (hysusonic):

now you would need to isolate the x

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

if you want x on the left side, you would add 3 to both sides (to move the -3 over) also you would subtract 4x from both sides (to move the 4x over)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So now we have 2x = 4x + 11?

OpenStudy (hysusonic):

yup now you have to bring 4x to the other side so you can isolate the x-value

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so now we have -2x + 11

OpenStudy (hysusonic):

why would it be -2x+11? where'd the equal sign go?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oops sorry. i meant to put the equal sgn

OpenStudy (hysusonic):

lol it's okay haha so now your equation is -2x=11 what do you do to isolate x completely?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

divide by -2

OpenStudy (hysusonic):

yup

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x = -5.5

OpenStudy (hysusonic):

can you put it in decimal or do you have to leave it in fraction form?
