What was one argument against nineteenth-century American imperialism? Traditional American principles traditionally opposed colonization. Social Darwinism meant that America would be superior without imperialism. America had sufficient sources of raw materials so there was no need for imperialism. The U.S. Army was too small to be effective overseas.
