there are a few approaches. when method is to determine a circle centered at the point and opitmize the radius

we can work the circle again, make it large enough so that it crosses the line at 2 points, then we have a midpoint that we can find the distance to

we can make a perp line thru the point, see where they cross, and distance it

we can take vectors and work a projection

we can use formulas
