how do you measure the distance between a point and a line?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

medals and fan

OpenStudy (amistre64):

there are a few approaches. when method is to determine a circle centered at the point and opitmize the radius

OpenStudy (amistre64):

we can work the circle again, make it large enough so that it crosses the line at 2 points, then we have a midpoint that we can find the distance to we can make a perp line thru the point, see where they cross, and distance it we can take vectors and work a projection we can use formulas

OpenStudy (er.mohd.amir):

drop perpendicular from point on line if line is ax+by+c=0 and ponit is (x1,y1) then distance of perpendicular =ax1+by1+c/{(sqrt(a^2+b^2)
