A laptop computer is purchased for $2500. After each year, the resale value decreases by 25%. What will the resale value be after 3 years?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well, what do you think it would be?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't know how to work out the equation. Which is why I asked.

OpenStudy (jordans_openstudy):

wouldn't it be 625?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay, well im going to try to help you to work this problem okay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the resale value decreases by 25% each year. 25% = 25/100 = 0.25 year = x So 0.25x decreases = - So your equation would be: (Starting value) - the change we found above. plug in what you know and solve.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well she did it for me! lol thanks @PsychoTink

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry, that must have all happened while I was typing. Didn't mean to steal your thunder.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So you would do .25(3) which is .75

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it was okay hun :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I skipped a part....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So total it will decrease 75% ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@sidney_girl1419 you might want to take over after all. I messed it up.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@PsychoTink you didnt mess up at all.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think where I went wrong is that x should be the starting value, not year. And then you would multiply by 3. I've confused myself now.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so you would multiply by .75 and then get 1,875 and subtract that from the original and get 625

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@ariabstr yes thats right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, I see where I confused myself now. Thanks for saving us all @sidney_girl1419

OpenStudy (anonymous):

your welcome guys. :) could i have a medal for helping yal out?
