As with other inequities they suffered, the soldiers in the black regiments were paid less than white soldiers were. The white soldiers made thirteen dollars each month, while the black soldiers made only seven dollars per month. However, in 1864, Congress ordered equal pay to all troops and provided back pay for the black soldiers to make up for the earlier pay differences.

African Americans fought bravely in the Civil War to earn their citizenship. They risked their lives, faced deep-seated discrimination and doubt, and received little respect, but they were not deterred. And along the way, they showed the establishment that heroism and courage are color blind.
