OpenStudy (kdeterline):

Strategically, Gettysburg defeated Lee's second (and last) invasion of the North, and effectively crippled the Confederate army for future strategic operations; the Union army gained, and kept, the strategic initiative in the eastern theatre of the war as a result of their victory at Gettysburg.Further,by clearly defeating Lee's army in a major battle, the ordinary Union soldiers received a considerable morale boost, giving them self beleief in their ability to win the war. The capture of Vicksburg gave the Union control of the whole length of the Mississippi river, thus effectively cutting the Confederacy in two geographically. This cut the east off from Texas beef and Louisiana salt, and the west off from eastern manufactures and imports from blockade runners. It also made strategic reinforcement of each theatre with troops from the other far more difficult. As for diplomatic effects, the possibility of European powers officially recognizing the Confederacy now disappeared completely;the inability of the Confederacy to win a major battle on northern soil was gone forever after Gettysburg,as was the prospect of official alliance with any European power. In terms of ending the Civil War through a negotiated peace, with Lee's defeat and subsequent retreat from Gettysburg, the military threat to major northern cities was removed, something that was crucial for the Confederacy if they wanted to force a negotiated settlement under which Lincoln would recognize the independence of the CSA.
