It should be fue. Era is the imperfect; that doesn't make sense. eran is plural, the subject is a singular noun. fueron is plural, again. This wouldn't make sense. Fue is the preterite of ir. But it is also the preterite of "ser". You need to use context clues to figure out in a sentence whether "fue" is ir or ser. Both are irregular preterite verbs and have the same exact conjugations.
