Makayla is talking to Mia about the whether we ever landed on the Moon. Mia says,” I have a theory about that.” What is wrong with Mia’s use of the term “theory” in this instance?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The definition of a theory is a supposition or a system of ideas intended to explain something, especially one based on general principles independent of the thing to be explained. I don't see how there is anything wrong with her use of the word.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

here is an article to help you understand the reasoning behind the reason why it is wrong. but basically a theory is something that you have a basic idea about and have proven with multiple experiments. whereas a hypothesis is simply something that you have an idea about but have not gone through the motions to have any justification to prove. http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/just-a-theory-7-misused-science-words/

your idea of theory is based upon the english dictionary which has been modified by lamens terms and other instinces of misuse of whatever word it might be. the article I attached should prove very useful!
