importance of myelin sheath and refractory period in nervous speed impulse

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The myelin sheath insulates nerves, so the electrical impulse of a nerve jumps from one area to the next that is not covered with myelin sheath (nodes between areas of sheath). This allows the impulse to travel faster. The refractory period is a very short period of time during which the nerve cell membrane is restoring its resting potential (a balance of ions across the membrane). The nerve cell fires by a specific flow of ions and this can't happen until the balance is restored. So there is a short time during which the nerve can't respond to a stimulus and this is called the refractory period.
