What is the significance of the Bering land bridge to the distribution of animals in what is now called North America and Asia?

At one time animals could walk between the two continents when there was land where the Bering Straits (water) is today. So the animals that crossed over to Asia from North America or vice versa are related to those lineages still left in the original home continent.
