JUST WANT TO KNOW IF I DID THIS RIGHT. A kite on a 160-foot string is caught on a pole. When the full length of the string is stretched in a straight line to the ground, it touches the ground a distance of 50 feet from the bottom of the pole. The string forms an angle of 17° with the ground when it is stretched like this. I put true but I'm unsure

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what made you think true? what work do you have so far?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i really don't have any evidence to back me up but i did it in my head @jim_thompson5910

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

do you have a drawing done at all? if not, then you should have something like this |dw:1432426111779:dw| the goal is to find angle x and see if it is 17 degrees

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it's false @robtobey @jim_thompson5910

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[x=\cos ^{-1}\left(\frac{50}{160}\right)=71.79 {}^{\circ} \]Sorry, my first posting was incorrect.

The 17 deg angle posted in the problem statement is way too small.
