If you have a graph, you can just see if the graphed line has any places where a vertical line (straight up and down) would cross what is graphed more than once.

For instance:


passes the vertical line test. There is no place where I could draw a vertical line to intersect the graphed line twice.


does not, however. The dashed vertical line intersects the graphed curve in three places.

If a curve doesn't pass the vertical line test, then it is NOT a function (in the chosen coordinate system)
