The ideas of Enlighenment were starting to be rejected. Why?

Because the ideas and ideology that followed suit were directly against everything the catholic church worked to uphold as the holy truth. In this aspect the philosiphers of this time period were committing heresy by the simple notion that the earth was round or the world is made of atoms... it made the pope and all of the apostals look like they were lying sacks of garbage so it had major resistance because the pope pretty much put out a hit list on people who agreed with people like gallileo!
