it was a compromise that tried to lower the tensions of slavery by giving each side a little of what they want.The controversial part is that the Fugitive Slave act (in the compromise) allowed people to go to the North and retrieve runaway slaves and made the northerners help bring them to the South, but people always said that this person is my slave.So black people got dragged into slavery even if they were free.
