a domain refers to a part of the whole object where the "mini magnets' are all pointing in the same direction. so it has a discernible magnetic polarity on that small scale. but to make the whole object a continuous "like-minded" domain, one mjust apply a very strong magnetic field to the whole. the end result is that all domains will now "point" in the same direction and you have made a magnet.
