My best guess on the first one is that the ETC molecules are mostly embedded in membrane while the other two processes occur in the cytosol or matrix (gooey parts).  That, or the ETC produces SO MUCH MORE ATP.

The second, isn't there an ETC in the thylakoid membrane?
