I am pretty sure this is just a rewording of the last question. Because the work done in a four-stroke engine by the gases comes in during the power stroke, as the combustion of those gases is what forces the piston back up.

If it said "which is the stroke where work is done ON the system of gases" , the answer would most likely be compression. But I am pretty sure this is just a rewording of the previous question.
