Barbara buys a box of pens for $4. For every additional box she buys, she gets a $1 discount. Which expression represents the total cost of the pens, c, as a function of the number of boxes, b?

c = f(b) = 4b – 1
c = f(b) = 4b + 1
c = f(b) = 3b + 4
c = f(b) = 4b + 3
c = f(b) = 4 + 3(b – 1)

2 boxes -- 2($4.00 - $1.00)
3 boxes -- 3($4.00 - $2.00)
4 boxes -- 4($4.00 - $3.00)

Well, it's kind of a problem, since...

5 boxes -- 5($4.00 - $4.00) = $0.00

If you buy five (5), they are FREE!!!!

One should clarify the problem statement with the original author.
