In a way, active listening is to not only show others' your understanding, but it is also useful because it enhances your understanding of the topic being spoken about. If you had to pick one option, however, it would most likely be (in my opinion) to prove to others that you are listening. I chose this answer because of literary seminars i attended for composition (writing class). My teacher explained that we should hear active listening (addressing the previous speaker with evidence/details from their speech as you respond; looking directly at the speaker; including your own opinion; arguing with opinions you don't agree with, etc...).
