modem stands for modulator/demodulator, so it takes a signal (normally a digital signal, places it on an analogue signal (modulation) and then transmits that signal via the AC networlk, and at the other end, it separates the DC signal from the AC signal (demodulation). So, I'm not sure if you would consider it as converting from AC to DC, that would be more the process of rectification rather than modulation/demodulation
