OpenStudy (youngstudier):
We'll make it into two rectangles. Let's find the area of the top one. 14*4=?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
56
OpenStudy (youngstudier):
Right, now, for the bottom one we do 12-4 first, do you know why?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
no why

OpenStudy (youngstudier):
because if you cut them into two seperate rectangles, the side length for the bottom rectangle will not be 12, so we take away the 4 which originally made it 12 to get the new side length, does that make sense?
OpenStudy (youngstudier):
I suppose that's a rather confusing explanation, isn't it?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
no not at all
OpenStudy (youngstudier):
Ok, so do 12-4=?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
8
