Hmm. We have three courses of meal, lets call them A, B and C. And we have three types of vegetable lets call them a,b and c.
Aa denotes that, "meal A and vegable a"
Ab denotes that, "meal A and vegetable b"
Ac denotes that, "meal A and vegetable c"

Ac, Aa and Ab are three of those meal combinations.
We have three vegetable for each of those course, so the total combinations, is 9.
\[3 \times 3 = 9\]
(number of courses) times (number of vegetables)
