For many years, the traditional story, or saga, about the Viking discovery of a land west of Greenland was thought to be a myth. There was no solid archaeological evidence that the Vikings had actually reached the shores of North America. Then, in 1960, a Norwegian named Helge Ingstad discovered a site on the northern tip of the Canadian island of Newfoundland. That's where a group of low mounds turned out to be the remains of a Viking settlement.
