What is f(4)? A. –4 B. 0 C. 4 D. 8 http://static.k12.com/calms_media/media/1417000_1417500/1417262/1/b402be9d10a6391d7ede4da4886305bb2b01d733/MS_PA_130905_170068.jpg

OpenStudy (unknownunknown):

f(x) = y. When x is 4... y is.. ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait... @unknownunknown i thought Y would be 4.. right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wouldnt X be -4 and y be 4?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, similar to your last one. F(x) is the normal format. So, in this case, X = 4. Go along the X line until you reach 4. Then, go up until you hit the line. This, is where your Y line is, and your answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so its C?

OpenStudy (unknownunknown):

Remember, a function gives us what's called a "dependent variable" from an"independent variable". If x is 4, it doesn't mean y will be 4. So f(x) does not equal x. f(4) is not necessarily 4. f(4) will be the y coordinate (4,y)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If Y = 4 then X would equal 0.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait.. no its A? -4?

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

no :/

geerky42 (geerky42):

"X = 4. Go along the X line until you reach 4. Then, go up until you hit the line. This, is where your Y line is, and your answer."

OpenStudy (unknownunknown):

As monkiwi said. Go to the value of x on the graph. What is the y value at that point?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, it isn't -4. Look at where the points intersect.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If Y = -4 X = -8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so i was right the first time.. its 4.. right?

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

o___O

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its not 4?? how is it not? the y meets at the 4??

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

we are given f(4) where x = 4.... go to where x = 4 it's like ... (4, y) who is the y in here?

geerky42 (geerky42):

|dw:1433129711758:dw|

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

wow thanks for giving out the direct answer -_-!

OpenStudy (unknownunknown):

Remember, your answer can only include somewhere that's actually a point on the graph (in this case the infinite points contained in the line)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

MY *************************************!!!! I AM THE MOST IDIOT PERSON!! I SWEAR.. u guys prob think im 3.. ugh! its 8..

geerky42 (geerky42):

Not really direct answer...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

dont tell me its not 8??? if its not 8.. dear .. my brain

geerky42 (geerky42):

I was just repeat @MonKiwi 's explanation as visual explanation.

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

if you think that's tough, check out all the questions I've asked >:D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok.. well my brain just xploded.. ugh who do i give medal too?? u all helped.. ALOT..

geerky42 (geerky42):

No one :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

none?

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

yeah make it fair.. no one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

um ok..

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

wait until next question then anyone can free for all.

geerky42 (geerky42):

Go to http://mathoverflow.net/ And @UsukiDoll 's question will be nothing :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

let me do this. one sec

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

what does that supposed to mean?

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

Oh I see! Hey man I'm getting there slowly but surely :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

first to answer ill medal.. plis explain :D

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

I'm out. This is too easy... I wanna do ODEs

OpenStudy (anonymous):

plis.. cmon! D:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

just answer.. cmon!! D::::

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the smart ones think im dumb.. and im a straight A student.. YIKEs

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

fineeeeeeeeeeeee F(x) -> F(5) implies that x = 5. just find where x = 5 in your chart and you will have y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so c?

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

seriously?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im sorry.. Im really trying here. you said the 5. and on the chart it has a 2 by it..

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

I said f(x) was the standard notation of a function . If we have something like f(5).. then .. I said x = 5 because f(x) -> f(5) implies that x = 5. on the x chart LOOK UP 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so b..

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

yeah

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i gave u medal.. sorry for wasting ur time.. :/
