The length of a rectangle is 5 mm longer than its width. Its perimeter is more than 30 mm. Let w equal the width of the rectangle.

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

any ideas?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well 2(x+5) + 2x = 30 ?

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

yep

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

solve it please

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well would you first divide 30 by 2 ?

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2(5+5) + 2x5 = 30 Width = 5 since 5 would substitute for x

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

w>5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The part of the question that confuses me is when they say the perimeter is more than 30 mm are they looking for 30 mm as the perimeter or can it be more than that?

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Let P = perimeter, then the question asks for P > 30.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

W=10 and the length would be 15 since the length is 5 mm longer than the width W=10 L= 15

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

They want all values of P such that P > 30 is a true statement. P > 30 29 > 30 False 30 > 30 False 31 > 30 True 32 > 30 True
