The number of candy bars Sarah can eat is 3 times the amount her dog can eat. On a Monday in the month of January, Sarah and her dog ate a total of 40 bars! How many did Sarah eat?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lets call "x" to the number of candy bars Sarah can eat and "y" to the amount the dog can eat, our first equation would be: "The number of candy bars Sarah can eat is 3 times the amount her dog can eat" translate it to X and y language: "X is 3 times Y" and to equations: \[x=3y\] it is your turn to write the second one: "Sarah and her dog ate a total of 40 bars"
